Last bit of GTA, I promise.

I know I haven’t posted in a long time, and if you’re waiting for part 2 of my GTA review, then fuck you, I’m not making it. It’s not that I’ve gone off GTA, it’s that I can’t be bothered talking about the bowling minigame. I’ve completed the game 100% now (without cheats!), and I couldn’t be more impressed with it. Sure, it has its niggles, but so does every game. At least we can think of this masterpiece as the GTA III of the 7th generation. III was a huge success, and a massive leap over the first 3 games, but most major complaints were aimed at the lack of bikes, or Claude Speed being born without a mouth. The next game, Vice City, was of course the greatest thing to ever come on a disc. I’d say IV is on a par with VC in terms of fun and “AWESOME!”. Looking back at Vice City, it’s clear what Rockstar need to focus on for the next GTA.

  1. A top-drawer soundtrack I love the soundtrack of IV, but there’s no denying that it doesn’t live up to the 2 greatest game soundtracks of all time, Vice City and San Andrea. However, it’s a well-known fact that once you put Free Bird into your game, the sequel is going to sound comparitively shit. Just look at Guitar Hero.
  2. A distinct theme to the game IV, like III, was relatively ‘theme-less’ in comparison to the Miami ‘86 and West Coast ‘92 settings of its predecessors. To be honest, I have no fucking clue where they’d take the franchise next. If they take it back to Vice City, what will they do with phones, Internet etc? Also, once you’ve made a carbon copy of New York, with a famous landmark every 10 feet, it’s hard to find a suitable place to go next. London? Barcelona? Toronto?
  3. Tommy Motherfucking Vercetti
  4. Tommy Motherfucking Vercetti
  5. Property Yes, we all miss property. I’m sure it will be back with a vengeance in 2 years’ time.

So my final, final, final verdict of IV? Well, to give it the perfect 10.0 would imply that I thought the game was a flawless work of art, which I would find physically possible to improve. And condsidering that Ocarina of Time (which was apparently rather good) has a Metacritic of 9.9, I don’t know if it would be fair to class this game as ‘better than the best’, and staple it as the greatest videogame of all time. Nevertheless, 10.0. Just stunning. Right, I’m off to listen to some New York Groove.
